Science has spoken! There are apparently an infinite number of parallel universes with infinite versions of ourselves. That’s an infinite number of Channing Tatums and Ryan Goslings. Maybe I’m Mrs Gosling in one such universe?
This might sound like something out of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but the science community has come up with the theory of multiverse. A new study says that the existence of a mysterious ‘Cold Spot’ in space might be the clue that we need to prove that our universe is just one in a string infinite universes. You could be rich and successful in another universe! Or you could be running from rabid dogs this very minute…
The Cold Spot came into existence more than 13 billion years ago when the universe was born. NASA’s WMAP satellite first spotted it in 2004 and this sight was later confirmed in 2013 by the ESA’s Planck mission.
The Cold Spot got its name as a result of the spot that it is colder by 0.00015 degrees Celsius than its surroundings. One theory that researchers had for this low temperature was that the number of galaxies it contains is comparably fewer, but a new study has shown that ‘massive supervoid’ simply could not exist. Which has led to other, more exciting possibilities, like that of a multiverse.
“We can’t entirely rule out that the Spot is caused by an unlikely fluctuation explained by the standard model [of particle physics],” said study co-author Professor Tom Shanks, an astronomer at Durham University.
“But if that isn’t the answer, then there are more exotic explanations.”
“Perhaps the most exciting of these is that the Cold Spot was caused by a collision between our universe and another bubble universe.”
“If further, more detailed, analysis … proves this to be the case then the Cold Spot might be taken as the first evidence for the multiverse.”
The thought of infinite copies of me is simultaneously terrifying and cool!
