The Vietnam War is one of the most gruesome events in history. It is no surprise that soldiers who fought this war together share a special kind of bond with each other.
Joe Falzone cherishes his memory of friendship with his war buddy Joe Martinez. It had been 50 years since he had last seen him, and, partly due to the fact that his friend had such a common name, he was unable to locate him.
The events of the war, the physical damages it brought, and the different paths of their lives made the two friends go their separate ways, but Falzone was committed to searching for his friend on Facebook. He never stopped searching and went through databases, attended vet reunions, and even went to the extent of hiring two private detectives.
All attempts were without luck and it seemed like Martinez had vanished. Falzone only had two clues: his name and the state in which he lived.
“I knew he was from California, but I didn’t know where in California,” Falzone said.
Bad leads made Falzone shift to searching on Facebook. He made a list of ten people that could be Martinez, but it wasn’t until he got to the last number that he found his friend.
Martinez was in Phoenix all that time. Falzone invited him over for Thanksgiving at his Texas home in 2015.
“I never thought I’d see him again,” said Martinez. “And it was God’s gift to me when he called me.”
Absolute strangers had tears in their eyes as the two war buddies hugged each other for the very first time in 50 years.
“Seeing that, it really touched me,” said eyewitness Tracey Sian. “I get a little emotional myself and I’m happy to see them come home and see each other. It’s just special.”
Both friends plan on keeping in contact with each other and plan to hold bigger reunions in the future.
