Landon Cunningham and his dad were enjoying their first MLB game as father and son. It was an afternoon full of fun, precious memories, and ALMOST a devastating disaster. Thankfully, Dad was there to step up to the plate, just in time.
Celebrating his 9th birthday, Landon went to watch his favorite baseball team win it big. Facing the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Atlanta Braves had a tough task ahead of them.
Capturing his excitement in the moment, the kid snapped a photo to share with his mom via text. A few moments later, the game got a little closer than Landon might have preferred.
When a 2 lb. wooden bat came barreling straight for his son’s head, Shaun Cunningham managed to show off his lightning reactions, just in the nick of time.
Without thinking twice, the man threw his arm out to the side, single handedly saving the boy from what could have been a severe injury.
Before the 9-year-old even knew what happened, the once-in-a-lifetime experience had already passed.
“It was going so fast I didn’t even hear it,” Landon said.
Thankfully, the heroic moment was caught on camera for the world to see.
“I saw it heading towards him. I didn’t have a lot of time. Guess I’d call it Dad-mode. Just protecting my son,” Shaun said, reliving the incredible memory.
In possibly the highlight of the entire game, little Landon’s favorite player gave him a special keepsake to remember the day. Going home with a 100% authentic MLB baseball bat, signed by Freddie Freeman himself, the 9-year-old was nothing but smiles the entire trip home.
