Potential New Kidnapping Scheme Using Gift Of Jewelry

Mother-of-four felt wary when she left the mall alone, finds ‘free gift’ on her windshield.

It’s just like the thrill of finding money in a coat pocket that you had completely forgotten about, or spotting a lost bill on the street. That unexpected excitement can be distracting, and that’s what some people prey on.

Savannah Nguyen took to the internet to raise awareness of a potential new scheme that took place at the Fox River Mall in Appleton, Wisconsin. Her mother was leaving the mall alone and as she headed to her car, she felt that something was odd.

As soon as she got into her car, a large white SUV pulled up right beside her. She found it odd that the large vehicle decided to park in the spot right next to her, even though the lot was full of other spots.

Driving home, the mother-of-four heard a strange banging sound against her back windshield. She didn’t pull over to inspect the noise, but kept driving home. When she arrived at her house, she found the source of the sound.

It was a little plastic bag with a ring inside.

Scribbled on the bag were the words, “Free gift: silver sterling ring from Kay Jewelers”.

While there are numerous ways to look at this incident and the motives for the gift, the combination of the ring and the lurking SUV convinced Nguyen that the two incidences were connected.

“They probably watched her get out of her car and placed it on her window, and waited for her to come back. Who knows what would have happened if my mom had gotten out of her car to see what was under her windshield while she was still in the parking lot.”

Nguyen urged everyone to take care and be aware of lures such as this one.

“Stay safe out there and tell all of your friends about the possibility of being lured into a robbery or kidnapping with simple valuables.”
