This woman was forced to make one of the most difficult decisions of her life. She had tried to raise her 3-year-old son as well as she could, but she simply couldn’t afford to continue. She gave him up for adoption. Years later, she was shocked to learn that he had never found his forever home.
Kris Smith was 18 when she gave birth to her son Matthew. A few years later, Kris was living out of a car and simply couldn’t find a job.
Like any mother, she wanted to provide for her son, but she knew that the situation was becoming too difficult. No 3-year-old boy should have to live in a car like that, so Kris made the call to put Matthew up for adoption.
It wasn’t an easy decision, especially as Kris was also given away by her parents too, so she knew all about the perils of foster care.
In the years that followed, things didn’t get much better for Kris. She continued to be homeless for several years, until eventually she realized that she couldn’t carry on living that way. One day, she walked into a branch of Wendy’s and asked for a job. She got it.
Through hard work and patience, Kris managed to save up cash and get herself a place to live. She even found some new friends and got married.
Kris’ new husband had his own children from a previous relationship, and this made her think of her son Matthew. She decided to call up social services and see how he was doing.
It had been seven years since Kris and Matthew had separated. Kris spoke to Matthew’s case worker, hoping and assuming that her son had found a great family and a happy forever home.
Sadly, this wasn’t the case. Matthew had never been adopted and was still living in an institution.
