Josh Buetow, father of Rileigh (aged 4) and Austin (aged 2), was set to embark on his first deployment on the USS Carl Vinson in March 2017.
His spouse, Brettany, and his children, dropped him off to say goodbye.
When little Rileigh and Austin screamed goodbye as their dad boarded ship, a kindly police officer took notice. Parked in his police car, SDPD Office James Weaver, who also had kids the ages of Austin and Rileigh, realized what was happening. The officer, a total stranger to the Beutows, called the kids over to the car.
His question to the kids was so moving that Brettany finally gave in and wept, despite her efforts to stay strong for her kids.
“As I was sitting there, I saw the family over here and the two little kids were by the rocks over here screaming to dad yelling bye and I figured that he couldn’t hear them cause I could barely hear them from across the parking lot,” said Weaver.
