We know a lot about our planet, but the oceans and seas are still filled with mysteries. Ocean exploration’s latest achievement includes the discovery of the USS Independence, which was sunk in WWII nearly 65 years ago.
When it did float, the USS Independence was an aircraft carrier.
Since it wasn’t of much use, post-war, the government decided to sink it. It was bombed 30 miles off the coast of San Francisco.
A while back, a remotely operated robot was sent down by scientists to try and find the ruins of the carrier.
Shockingly enough, the wreckage had been changed into an ecosystem with tons of marine life. This was just part of it, though.
Remains of a fighter plane were also found among the wreckage. It was on the ship when it was destroyed.
The turrets survived the bombing, even though they were due for a good scrub, considering all the moss they had on them.
The discovery and investigation involved in this project is a true testament to how far we’ve really come.
